23 ... and counting

" ... Pro athlete I'm not no wannabe, Waitress asked how many bottles? I said 23 ... "

This is part of the club banger '23' by Mike Will featuring Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J and the twerk ambassador, Miley Cyrus. Some 2 days ago I was seated in a cyber, making an extended version of the song and it's video, completely unaware that I'd be hitting 23 on my recent birthday. Awesome right? Anyway, I've never been a fan of making a fuss about birthdays but this I will:

1, it was the most boring, boring most birthday I've ever had. Reasons aren't really important.

2, this year has taught me a lot in terms of friends. I've lost friends to the angel of death and I've also lost friends, and not because they're dead. That's even sadder. I'm just glad I've met new people that actually mean something to me.

3, family is overrated. Unless they're your blood brothers & sisters, I don't really think you should care that much. I'll forever be grateful for family & my cousins to be specific, but if you're that good pretender of a family member, get off my case. But hey, I'm just speaking from my own experience. Maybe yours is better.

Now that I'm 23, it's time to go 'Pro Athlete' in every thing I'm involved. Relationships, family, career, friends and company etc etc. I'll probably start caring more about some people in my life and I'll stop caring about people that don't and will never notice that I've wasted my care on them. I'll probably love you more and show it, and I'll apologize for being a prick. I'll probably delete a few numbers from my phone to make room for new people I'm about to meet between my 23rd and 24th checkpoint in life. I wanna promise myself that I'll stop being lazy. I really wanna stop. Time to be Mr BusyMan. Time to go Pro.

This will be a long ass post if I don't stop here. Just to thank y'all who've seen me smile & frown, heard me laugh and curse, helped me up & pushed me to the ground, warned me about sukuma wiki between my teeth, reminded me of my open fly ... anyone that has helped me be me at 23. I thank you.

MY REVIEW: Marvels Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D

Battle Of New York, The Avengers. If you can remember those two, then watching Marvel's new series will be smooth. I still don't know why Marvel insisted on having their name on the name of the series. Well, it's theirs; none of my business. I'm just here to tell of what happens.

Agents Of Shield is like a follow-up TV series of what happened in Avengers. It was a nice movie, all super-heroes .. bla bla bla ... but we all wished that the movie lasted longer. M.A.O.S does that but not from the super-hero point of view.

S.H.I.E.L.D is an organisation headed by someone we all thought died in the Avengers movie (insert heavenly voices here). The series then follows the activities of a team that tries to 'contain' anything alien-ish. The 1st episode is on a very strong guy (of course Thor & Hulk are on their own league) who struggling with whatever technology makes him that strong. His buddy who had the same tech exploded like a bomb after it ate him from the inside-out. S.H.I.E.L.D then steps in to 'contain' him but with limited time because he's bound to explode too.

This is probably a boring review but for those who love new exaggerated technology & sci-fi, planes & simple cars that can transform, this is the series for you. There's humor throughout the episodes and enough action to make you forget about your popcorn.

I just hope and pray that the TV series holds water. Would really hurt if it will be canceled. ENJOY!

Revolution is back !

It's been a while since I was here last. Just thought that I'd brush off the cobwebs with a little something that most of us have been patiently waiting for: REVOLUTION season II. For those that never watched it's 1st season, Revolution is (was) mainly about an impossible blackout that engulfed the whole world. The 1st season was on the struggle of getting power back and all the relevant journeys one would take.

Now to it's 2nd season ... the story is freaking wide ! Just watched it's 1st episode and I can assure you that you won't see anything coming. You know those TV series that you can predict it's 2nd season by what happens at the end of the 1st season? This ain't one of those. There are a lot ... A LOT of new faces in this season that I thought I was watching a different series. The plot has also been widened and according to what I gathered from the 1st episode, Revolution season 2 won't be just about trying to get power back. (YES, there's still no electricity in Revolution season 2 ... yet)

SPOILER ALERT:
Charlie is no longer living with her family, she ran away from home. A major character dies in episode 1 :-( (I never saw that coming). Monroe is still alive with the help of a totally new identity, struggling though.

That's all for now. Keep it here for my review on Marvels Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D, awesome new series !

Man’s greed is killing the girl child

I was in the Kitchen on Sunday night, fixing supper for the family because that is what I do these days. Well, I’m not only preparing for bachelorhood but also impressing the ladies because I heard knowing how to cook earns you more ‘bonga points’ in the romance field. For anyone, being in the kitchen means more than just fixing supper. It will include any other thing from washing utensils, cleaning up the house and other house chores. This is something for men and something else for the women.
Well, I was also listening to the 9:00 pm (since I couldn’t watch) and this story about girls as young as 10 years old that were being married off really caught my attention. These girls are almost the age of my younger sister in class 4 but are now wives of young men of at least 27 years. To communities such as the Maasai and the Samburu, this is no surprise at all. It is their culture and this shouldn’t be a shocking thing to anyone within their region. What’s the whole idea behind the culture, you may ask.
Such communities take pride in and measure their wealth in terms of the number of cattle, goats and sheep – we all remember our history lessons, yes? It is in these same communities that men are the final say. They marry off their daughters at this tender age in exchange of a huge bride price and the interesting part is the gigantic respect that they receive from the rest of the community. The marriage is arranged and in no time, the girl child is a wife to someone.
I appreciate culture, but when it comes to such traditions, we need to wake up and draw the line. Girls at this age are still memorizing their ABCDEFGHs in schools but due to the circumstances, these other girls are forced to learn PREGNANCY in their new homesteads. They are expected to carry out duties for fully matured women; fetching firewood and water from sources that are miles away. In a different part of the country, girls at this age are testing and fixing their dolls. While others are living a life with variations such as being a child, a youth and an adult, these children experience a brief part of childhood and expressly missiled to adulthood.
The dangers are even worse when it comes to motherhood. Imagine how complicated it is for a child to carry another child for 9 months. The circumstances that led to this are unimaginable. There have been reports of young girls dying at child labor because of complications during pregnancy and childbirth. What if they do fine during such stages? How is someone expected to bring up their own children when they aren’t even teenagers?
As a country we need to think about such individuals in our community. We have been talking about empowering women andeducating the girl child for a long time now. There shouldn’t be any celebrations unless such girls are rescued from the claws of their own community and put in schools. Women don’t have a say in such arrangements and this is why we need to step in and help them. As a community, we may have come a long way with the traditions but we need to wake up and see that some of them hurt our own children.
Sure, the bride price is great but is that really what it takes to rip away someone’s childhood? Is that what it takes to make your own child someone’s wife? You will never see her happy face when she plays in your compound. All you will wake up to is a whole herd of cattle, waiting to be milked. Just like how a young child is tempted by candy, this is offer is truly tempting. The greed of all that is what is putting the girl child in ugly circumstances. Let’s step up and stop the greed.

Get ready for renovations !

We all have this fantasy about the future and how we want it to be. We build this future world where we make our lives so perfect and have the people we love the most with us. We can project a whole day of the future we want and still be happy. But what happens when something slight about this world is changed?

This happened to me recently and I have to admit, swallowing it in was the most difficult thing. Fortunately, I was under the influence which provided me with enough courage to face it as one of the many factors that I don’t like but have to live with. It’s true; factors that are designed to change your future are always major – no matter how small they seem to be at the moment. You will think you are okay with something that’s bound to come but once it is here, you don’t even know how to go about it.

In other news, you better design your future world that is build up in your head in a way that it can accommodate renovations. Make it flexible so that if anyone in your life exits before you live it, you can always make amendments. To those that have lost their loved ones so soon, hope you gather enough strength and courage to rebuild your world. You need to be strong for those who depend on you. For those who are temporarily away, hang in there. Patience is a virtue but I’m not saying that it always pays.

The Vampire Diaries season 4 finale episode

The Vampire Diaries season 4 finale episode, “Graduation,” airs this Thursday, and based on this new sneak peek and extended promo, it’s going to be a fantastic episode!
It’s been a complicated season of The Vampire Diaries – first Elena turned into a vampire, then she was sire bonded to Damon, then she lost her humanity, then her world narrowed into hating Katherine.
Meanwhile, Jeremy discovered he was a Hunter, then was killed by Silas, whom Bonnie was lured into raising as she learned expression magic from the creepy professor Shane.
Now, only the season finale remains. The veil to the other side has been dropped, and dead supernatural creatures are flooding to Mystic Falls.
The cure for vampirism is in Damon’s hands, and Bonnie has died and turned into a ghost. And then there’s the high school graduation to deal with!

Holiday: here we come!

Finally! The long awaited holiday is here! I have never anticipated an holiday like I did this time round and it's not just about the books and academics but some other reasons.

I'm finally done with my 3rd year in campus and that's not something that you take for granted. Funny how time flies and you don't realize it. I just can't believe that next time we open, it'll be my last lap in the 8-4-4 marathon. I've seen many leave. I've bid 3 classes goodbye and now it's my turn to be at the top of the pyramid and breath the air before flying out into the world.

In that connection, I wanna congratulate all the friends and enemies that just completed their four years in Maseno University. All those Christians, Muslims and pagans that I knew. All those that we engaged in legal & illegal 'food' supplies. All those that knew me and those that didn't. The likes of Bizzle, Oyier, MM, Andrew Mutuva, Ngugi, Ricky, Amu, Hamfrey, Otiato, Abraham Dalle, Olulu, Pepe etc etc. It's really hard remembering all of your names but I'm just glad you pulled through quite fine. You never left any souvenirs ... that's the sad part that you'll have to face next time we meet.

Back to me, I pray that as I start my long holiday, a lot of positive and self-developing things will happen. I hope that I'll grow more than I've done in the past long holidays. By growing I mean literally and in the mind. I really need to fatten-up (If you know me, you know how I'm not so slI'm). I hope that i'll learn new stuff that I've always avoided. It is time. So help me God.

Kwa hayo mengi na machache, I wish a happy and smooth long holiday to my fellow comrades and hope to see you well as we reopen. I hope you won't be as fat as I'll be then.

BIG OR SMALL PICTURE

Weird and normal week. Can't complain though, not this one. It has been full of everything and everyone; relationshipwise, friendshipwise, economicwise and *sigh* academicwise. Friends have been friends, conmen have been conmen and b**ches have advanced in their own field.

What made me write this post is because of the so called "bigger picture". We always hear this in movies but how many times do we choose to sacrifice that one small thing that we love for that bigger thing that we really hate being present / happening? How many times do we give up our seat in the bus for that one person who needs it? How many times do we ditch salt and eat tasteless food? How many times do we keep aside that one person who means the world to you and choose the many that they can't live without?
You never know the magnitude of this pain until you actually experience it and well, I experienced this "big picture" and it's not really a good one to look at.

A lot of people may not see what the picture is. Some may even benefit from it without knowledge about it. You will have several reasons to justify it. You might wanna tell yourself anything desirable so that you'll sleep at night but one thing is for sure: things won't be the same again. Whether big or small, the choice of picture and consequences that will follow is all yours.

Have a lovely weekend guys!

Exams already smelling but still ...

This is probably the worst part of a semester to any student. It gets even 'better' for a Maseno University student who has notes of only half of his syllabus just because the elections got in the way. With news of exams being next week, unlike we previously hoped for a one more week allowance, everyone is now locked indoors absorbing knowledge. The cold and rainy season is also part of the motivation process. All the best in your exams guys.

On the same line of academics, impromptu CATs are also hell on earth for any student. If you've ever woken up at 7:15 am, got to the lecture hall at 7:45 am and then you were told that you 60 minutes CAT started at 7:10 am, then you know what i'm talking about. Curse Advertising II !! But a student gotta do what a student gotta do. *wink*

Let's get to the fun part, shall we. There will be a Maseno University Aids Control Unit sponsored event tonight at the GSQ from 6 pm to midnight I think. There shall be HIV testing and counseling, Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC), STI screening and treatment and most important of all, mad fun! You don't wanna miss that. Besides, it's free!

And finally, the Droid heads. I was snooping around some blog and came across this android app called Sidebar. It is basically a new way of multitasking on your android, a brilliant one I must say. Once installed, you have to configure it a little, to your own liking, and then you're ready to go. With this, you don't need a menu button on the screen or even the dock. You could hide it and leave your whole screen blank. The sidebar is hidden on any side of the screen that you chose and once tapped, it appears with your selected apps. You can navigate from one app to another with this side bar and it also doubles as a task manager. Go try it!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day

It's been ages since I celebrated St. Patrick's Day or Paddy's Day as the Irish call it. Maybe it's because I was in a high school named after him and once I was out, the holiday was out of my way just like my Chemistry or Physics text book. Or maybe I've never had enough motivation to celebrate it.

I read somewhere that St Patrick's Day is an official holiday in Ireland: they celebrate the coming of Christianity to their land. The best part of this celebration (no matter how Christian it should be) is that the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and
propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption. Now I'm really sad that i didn't discover Wikipedia early enough. Otherwise each of my St. Patrick's High school mates would have been uniformly high on every 17th March and maybe we'd still be celebrating the holiday even after high school.

Well, no worries. I've read Wikipedia, check. I'm out of high school, check. Now, let us celebrate St Patrick's Day like we're supposed to, check. One more thing; remember to compensate on all those non-alcoholic St Patrick's Days you missed, double check !!

HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY PEOPLE !!!

LETTER TO ALL MY GIRLFRIENDS

Dear Ex-Girlfriend,
How have you been ever since ... you know what. I hope you are good and that whoever came after me isn't doing as much or as good as i did. Better still, i hope you are still single so that on this Valentine's Day you could just catch a horror movie, all alone, after a long day of sweating your armpits off. I recommend re-watching Wrong Turn 1,2 and 3: it will remind you of me. Wait, it actually remind you of you. Please pick another movie. I'm just kidding, have a lovely Valentine's Day.

Dear Girlfriend,
I hope you skipped the above letter. Unless, God forbid, you wanted to read of what you'll be reading in future. I told Santa to postpone my Christmas gift till this day: just to be with you. Guess Santa isn't real after all. I really miss you and hate the fact that everyone today will be reminding me that. All that red, surprise gifts, holding hands, exchanging smiles, stealing glances, blowing kisses, firing winks, sending flowers, sharing ice cream, licking on chocolate etc.
No worries though. I always find something to convince me that Valentines Day is just another ordinary day. Just that everyone's role models are Bassanio and Portia. Besides, chocolate is just sweetened and repacked human feces. No biggie.
Love you to the end of the world babegal.

Dear Future Girlfriend,
LOL ! Keep your hopes high.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!

Unsettled medical bills hold father, mother and their daughter's body in India

A Kenyan couple is being held in India along with the body of their daughter due to unpaid medical bills. The couple had accompanied their daughter Patricia Mwangi who was suffering from non-Hodgkin Lymphoma to a New Delhi hospital to seek treatment.

Patricia, 29,  however passed away  on December 28, 2012 while undergoing treatment at the hospital. She had earlier being misdiagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma after she went to a doctor in Kenya. She underwent six stages of chemotherapy before a second opinion by a different doctor discovered the misdiagnosis.

The parents are held in India together with the body and the family needs Sh3.7 million to pay off bills and secure their release. Patricia’s sister, Vicky, speaking on behalf of the family is appealing to well wishers to assist them in raising the funds and is also appealing to the Kenya High Commission in India as well as the government to come to their aid. This will enable the release of the parents as well as the repatriation of Patricia's body to Kenya for burial.

Sh.1 million had already been raised by Tuesday evening and contributions are still streaming in. Please help by sending your contribution to MPesa PayBill number 600100, Account NO. 0100002617271.

Welcome 2013

Dear Blog
It has been long. I was gonna post this just after this year kicked in but I thought waiting for some time would bring in something new. Well, did that with #KOT (Kenyans On Twitter) in mind. You can expect a whole new package from these insane people. However, we didn't stop being the usual Kenyans that we are. You know, the ones that are bad with beating deadlines on anything - the voter registration, SIM registration, passing of bills in parliament, posting back of HELB loan forms ... etc. Good thing they didn't terminate the SIM cards' connections.
2012 ended with the obvious end-of-year awards with a few subarus here and there. More fun TTs followed and you can't end the year in a sane or sober mode; that's what I learnt from #KOT. We all remember the tweefs that spilled over to the  new year, ones we wished we'd participate in, ones we wished we didn't pepeta and also the ones that we wished #KOT didn't notice because you knew you lost before it even started.
2013 kicked in! Happy new year btw, and i gotta say this again 'new year resolutions are overrated'. Whatever goals you think you'll put up with throughout the year, let me tell you this; you are wasting your ink, paper, notes space and those Notes Apps on your phones. You're just gonna drink like last year, only that it's this year's Bluemoon, Guinness Kubwa, Keg and Changaa. You're gonna get high only that this year's weed wouldn't be as green as last year's because of global warming.
Moving on, please welcome the newest NGO in the streets of Twitter *claps getting louder* #TeamMafisiress aka, TeamFisiress. Unveiled on 4th January 2013 due to gender equality (and a certain hyena family photo), #TeamMafisiress members are happy that they now have a platform to discuss and debate about all their preys spotted on Twitter. #TeamMafisi are proud and ready to share the eyes' cake with you.
Staying on matters of reduction of the male gender cake, reports show that there is a real and credible danger of the human being species going the way of the dinosaur as men produce less and poor quality sperm globally. For reasons only known by itchy balls, I didn't continue with reading that article, so be warned !

Have an awesome 2013 !
